Venezuelan sculptor and painter Enrico Armas was born in Caracas, Venezuela. He begins his exhibition activity as a sculptor at the age of 16. At the age of 20 he receives a scholarship from the French Government to study art in Paris, France. There he studied sculpture and engraving at the Ecole d`Art Decoratives de Nice, France and Graphic Arts at the Ecole d`Art Decoratives de Paris, France. He then did internships at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and attended the workshops of renowned artists such as Etienne Martin and Carlos Cruz Diez, in Paris.
The space in the work of Enrico Armas is rich in matter, in color, in nuances and in a fragmentation that affects the irregularity of the plane. Color is superimposed, complementary, suggestive and transparent. The artist implements a system where the language is based on geometry, then circles, half circles and rectangles appear; evocation of nature in paradigms and codes of his own iconography, on which he insists. He makes archetypes, suggests or underlines the silhouette of a horse, his ever faithful companion, sometimes a face or a flower. These signs are open, when a few lines indicate the outline of the animal or the object, or closed when the figure of a flower is a stain, a precise touch that changes note but insists on the simplicity of its subject.
In Venezuela his work is represented in numerous public, private collections and can be found in the most important museums of the country: the prestigious National Art Gallery, Carlos Cruz Diez Print and Design Museum, Museum of Culture, Museum of Contemporary Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Arturo Michelena Museum, Jacobo Borges Museum, Museum of Print and Design “Carlos Cruz Diez”, Alejandro Otero Museum, Science Museum, Museum of Popular Art of Petare, Museum of Contemporary Art of Zulia, Museum of Contemporary Art of Maracay. He is also represented in Spain at the Museum of the Letter in La Coruña, Galicia. In the United States at the Museum of the Americas in Miami, Florida. Enrico Armas has obtained more than 15 awards and recognitions in his country. He has more than 80 individual exhibitions and 200 group exhibitions. His large metal sculptures of different heights, 3, 6, and 9 meters among others, have been integrated in public spaces in Venezuela and abroad. Between 1983 and 2010 his large sculptures were placed in public spaces, universities, cultural centers to be enjoyed by citizens.
My painting is of the figurative abstract genre, with a consistent methodology, which after much research and practice, I managed to create an alphabet of color stains, where using the superposition of many layers of color, I got a framework that allows the veiling and the translucency of all the colors used. In many of my works, a field of superimposed colors appears, suddenly a horse, a flower, or some object that allows to feel the purity of the space, accompanying the mass of color that delimits it. The gestuality of the stroke must always carry the rhythm of the drawing, which must be resolved with the painting itself. In my paintings, the space is loaded with geometric signs, signals and icons that in turn are only paint, as if graphically solving the plastic dilemma. Pure painting with places of total luminosity, with colors that do not get dirty, with brief names, a flower, a woman's face, a horse. The format is enveloping and establishes an almost physical link with the viewer.
