Phillip D Breske is a self-taught central-Florida photographer with an eclectic eye for big landscapes, intimate portraits, beautifully mundane still life, and everything in between. Known locally primarily as a live music photographer, his long-time passion is a majestic landscape, sometimes with a model in the foreground.
His childhood in Miami was spent exploring the suburbs of the city and Everglades National Park. While the spark of creativity was there from youth, it wasn’t until after a career in the US military that he began to seriously push himself to create and display great photos.
Relocating to Ocala in 2010 was the move that set a professional career in motion. The local music scene was growing and Mr. Breske refined his signature style, creating photos that evoke masters of sports photography, with high contrast portraits that highlight the emotion and dedication of the musicians performing in and around central Florida.
At the same time, Ocala National Forest offered over 600 square miles of forests, rivers, lakes, and wildlife, all within an hour of home. Channeling his photographic heroes, Clyde Butcher and Ansel Adams, Mr. Breske has amassed a collection of hundreds of forest images, many of which now adorn the walls of Ocala’s private homes and businesses.
In the winter of 2022, Mr. Breske was forced to argue for the rights of all Ocala artists to display the nude human form in their work. After being asked to remove the nudes from his display at a monthly public art event, he made a statement at the city council meeting and eventually prevailed in a meeting with the city attorney where it was agreed that the display of nudity in art is not illegal and cannot be censored.
Future endeavors include photographing state and national parks all around the United States, but he will always make time for musicians and artists during his travels.
I am inspired by the great masters of photography who have come before me. Mixing modern technology with old-school techniques, I interpret what I see in a way that is, I hope, beautiful to the viewer.
