A true alchemist of her craft, Mel primarily works in oil, meticulously mulling and mixing her own paints to achieve nuanced tones and textures. Beyond her studio, Mel is an ardent educator at her studio Fiorentino Atelier, sharing her passion and techniques in oil painting.

Artist Statement

For me, painting is a process of inquiry—an intimate dialogue between spirit, subject, and self. My work begins with a question, and through the act of creation, I seek the answer. This process often becomes a deeply spiritual experience, one that unfolds slowly with each layer of paint. I’m consistently drawn to the human form—figures and portraits captivate me. There’s something magnetic about the presence of a person, something sacred in the attempt to translate their energy, emotion, and story onto canvas. I believe that to truly paint someone, you must fall in love with them—at least for a moment. You must see them, feel them, and in some way, become them to capture their essence. Although largely self-taught, I root my practice in classical techniques, drawing inspiration from the old masters while allowing space to explore. I love playing with bold color palettes and unexpected combinations, always pushing to discover something new. In recent years, I’ve taken that curiosity further by handcrafting my own oil paints, which led to the creation of the Fiorentino Oil Colors Old World Collection—a line inspired by ancient pigments and traditional methods. It's my way of reviving the past and breathing new life into the history of color. Ultimately, my goal as an artist is to connect—to the subject, to the viewer, and to something larger than both. My paintings are not just representations; they are moments of understanding, pieces of myself, and windows into the beauty of being human.
