As a Florida native born in 1956 in Tampa, Michael studied advertising art at a vocational high school and began a career in the advertising field when he was 18 years old at a regional supermarket chain. His fine art study began at Hillsborough Community College and continued at the University of South Florida after some years of employment in the marketing art/sign painting fields.
He has recently retired after 24 years of employment at Tampa’s Museum of Science and Industry, firstly as an exhibit designer and the last 7 years as their resident artist. He provided the guests at MOSI access to a working artist, sharing painting techniques and art history with the visitors while painting live on the museum’s exhibit path, becoming, for lack of a better term, an interactive art exhibit.
Michael has been squarely focused on furthering his fine art career by participating in various art shows throughout central and east coast Florida while balancing the enjoyment of his family and his other passions of golf and hi-end audio.
In retirement Michael keeps himself busy at the easel in his home studio continuing to create his work dealing with the concept of technology supplanting humans.
"Technology is a vital part of our everyday lives and the further it advances, the more dependent we become on it. My work provides a look into how much we have come to depend on developing technology and where that may lead us in the future.
I use robots as a metaphor for technology, often placing them in commonly held human positions to illustrate the point that we are gradually being replaced by technology. The increasing juxtaposition of high technology and nature has become the recent focus of my work, causing us to reflect on what technology adds to our lives…and what it may take away.
I use acrylic paint on gallery wrapped stretched canvas. Most of the work is 36x48 inches which is very close to the ratio of a flatscreen television…our usual window into the world. I have begun doing some smaller scale work to accommodate the “wall space challenged” patron. "
